Our primary purpose is to please the Lord

September 19, 2024

“The Law is like handcuffs that bind you to strict rules, Paul tells the Galatians. Grace is the key that sets you free.” -Dr. J. Vernon McGee, from our Bible Companion for Galatians

When we choose to follow Jesus, we don’t follow rules, we follow principles. Our primary purpose is to please God. That’s the good news Dr. McGee shared in our study of Galatians, and it’s just what Amadin in Benin needed to hear. Here’s his story:

“I grew up in a Muslim family and was taught all the religious practices of this faith from a young age. In addition to the prayer obligations, I also strictly adhered to the dietary restrictions, specifically not consuming pork. Everywhere I went, I always avoided eating pork, fearing that it would defile me. When I became a Christian more than ten years ago, I still held onto this law in my heart, not allowing myself to be defiled by pork. In a way, despite my faith, I still saw pork as a potential stumbling block before my Lord. And, I admit, it used to annoy me when I saw other believers consuming it. However, I am now grateful to God for opening my eyes through your teaching in my language of Fongbe. I have learned that it is not through food or rules that we draw near to God or distance ourselves from Him. Today, I live in freedom and know that studying God’s Word and prayer bring me closer to Him. All glory to God for His grace.”

It’s true, the law says “don’t do this” and “don’t do that,” but God wants us to make choices based on what pleases Him. Today ask Him to help you make decisions not out of obligation but purely to please Him, and pray more people in Benin do the same.
